of moths and memories.

look what i came across! Image hosted by Photobucket.com

this is the ONLY picture my dad has of himself when he was just a toddler.. with my paternal grandparents, his elder brothers and sister (4 siblings arrived subsequently after that). perfectly preserved in a moth-eaten photo album, my mum told me it was probably taken in a studio in malaysia- which explains the cherry blossom backdrop.

amazingly, none more was taken until he was in his early twenties. this solo photograph compared to the stacks of albums dedicated to my elder sister's toddler days..

this is belongs to my mum. with my yeye and nainai and her two elder brothers. i think the two pictures reflectS the different family backgrounds they both came from. i mean, just take a look at how taitaish-coiffed my maternal grandmother's hair was! doesn't she remind you of a character that would look right at home in adeline yen mah's falling leaves?

my mum who was thinking of creating a black&white photo gallery in the dining area manged to scan digital copies of my dad's photograph. reproductions in a click. eerie huh. how copious technology overrides the cherished feeling of something perishable.

a gathering.

grandads, who never showed physical affection for their own children, lavishing generous doses of affection on their grandchildren.
the constant ooh-ing and aah-ing of how much weight one has lost.
the taboo of looking a few pounds heavier.
chaos caused by kids who have too much adrenaline to spare.
adults, ranked in order of seniority, seated over the dinner table.
while kids informally pick their food from a bufft-style setting, then assembling in front of the television.
the clear separation of husbands and wives who dominate different areas of the living room for gender-led talks.
the relentless chasing of toddlers who could had to put just about anything that fits into their mouths.

just some of the sights and smells gathered over last night's family gathering.

i haven't shopped in while. as in not just windows-shopping but engaging in the 'real transaction of goods and services,' i bought a couple of wool jumpers today, which though probably intolerable given singapore's humidity would have been perfect for the chilly winters of denmark. i also saw THE bag in nine west which i know would look soo soo marvellous with every i have.. i haven't felt such longing for anything or anyone in such a lon while, glad to know something still makes make my heart skip a beat faster.

new pet peeve: why the hell do people pen- scribble in library books? get your own books to vandalise, cheapskate!

SMU Padi Padi

waddsat.

guys, drop whatever you are doing.. run out to the nearest 7-eleven to buy 4D, TOTO, horse racing bets or any lottery ticket you can get your hands on.. WHY?!
because for the first time in weeks, i didn't have my usual-is-an-understatement homemade noodles for lunch in school!

instead, i had honey-glazed chicken with pineapple rice from padi-padi at kopitiam. to be honest, i have been intrigued by this dish ever since the pyramid mould caught my eye as i thought it would make a great picture for my blog. slowly but surely, i am letting my blog run my life. fabulous.

i cannot decide whether it is an odd dish or just my tastebutts were dysfunctional after the soup. but the seeming pineapple rice had a rich tinge of instant noodles flavouring -think sesame msg.. huh?! -my point exactly. the chicken was fine, think a cold storage deli counter one would have put this to shame, ut i cannot really complain. it is "school food" afterall. haha

muhd had crispy chicken with pineapply rice with soup cream of creamy mushroom. i had a lick (i can't even say sip as the soup/ cream was one hell thick and overpowering), cringed and took a long sip of my pepsi light. though i didn't try the fried chicken, muhd said it was so-so.

hmm, i should just stick to homemade noodles next time.

Dino Cafe

selamat hari raya.

school on a public holiday? how utterly disrespectful!

well, when your final presentation is due on monday, you might as well take 'holidays' and 'weekends' out of your dictionary for the time-being.

but today it was a beautiful morning, cool and breezy.. created by the previous night downpour so before my meeting, Family and i headed over to dino's for brunch.

then i felt a irrepressable urge to brighten up the feeling of being in school on a publc holidays.. so i bought a walnut cake block from dino's!

walnut and carrot cake. *drumroll please. unlike coffee club's, the carrot cake is light&loose, unbelievable moist and choked full of carrot wholesomeness. the cream cheese which tasted like white chocolate provided an guiltish- oomph appeal.. worth every bit of the bta-carotene that i am suppose to abstain from.

roasted tomato onion- a bowl of soul-fetching soup.

cedele che cedele..

emails. how many of us still use emails to converse today? and i don't mean emails that contain the following sentences, "WHERE IS THE DAMN REPORT YOU PROMISED TO SEND OUT LAST NIGHT" or "guys, I cannot make it for project".. not school emails but hotmail gmail yahoo- domain emails.

with msn, blogs and handphones, the email hardly seems necessary but i really beg to differ. i used to receive regular emails from aizhen, who updated her friends on life in cheltenham .. sad to say, the newletters are now dufunct .. perhaps cambridge just isn't as inspiring as cheltenham.. haha..

right now, some really good friends of mine and i have revived the email- updating concept amongst the four of us. very girlie. at times saucy. but 100% heartening. i think i should make it a point to update emails as frequently as life allows .. so you guys -charl, nadia and wai.. better reply too!

fried carrot cake.

i didn't mean to take a shot of this initially but it felt like injustice not to snap a shot of this sweet eggy sensation on chopsticks.

awfully chocolate's chocolate cake. stepping into awfully chocolate's cake felt like taking a step into a interior designer's studio and until you put your order down for a cake, i would not blame you for admiring the clean polished white surfaces. WHAT AN IRONY! since their brand logo is a chinese character HEI (mandarin for black). ok, back to the cake.
