Weekend Essentials

My current favourite weekend curry puff from PK Express (Stall #23, Serangoon Gardens Food Centre) has 3 essential components:

1. Slurp-some, spicy, and filled with sharply chopped fillings
2. Shortcrust pastry. Deep-fried. Golden tan
3. The kicker: An inner diaphanous layer that is a little undercooked and doughy

Happy weekend!

Weekend Discovery: Rolina's Curry Puff

I should be in bed right now.

But I am strangely awake for someone who has been up since 6:30am on a Sunday morning. I know what you are thinking, no self-respecting corporate soul should be up before the sun rises and eggs hatch bake right? Well, at least I didn't rise early in vain as we beat the Sunday breakfast crowds at Serangoon Food Centre.

Black carrot cake at Serangoon Food Centre is de riguer but I needed my curry puff fix too. I bought a sardine puff from the drinks store and I wasn't expecting much as curry puffs aren't their bread and butter. That side, the puff was cold and tough despite it being fished out of a heater. I ate it anyway as I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. But down to the last bite, I spied from the corner of my eye a flash of curry puff innards on a signboard.

"I would just kill myself if that store sold curry puffs for a living" I told KW.

Turns out it was more "I died and gone to heaven".

For $1.20, I was handed a piping hot curry puff by a sweet old man who seemed full of gratitude - when I was the one fraught with delirium.

Slightly larger than a golf ball, Rolina's curry puff was stuffed silly with potato cubes, onions and egg. There is supposedly quite an interesting story about its name (which I can't be bothered to paraphrase) but I am pleased as a puff puck to know that I can find awesome freshly-made curry puff here.

Yet another w-i-n-n-e-r for Serangoon Food Centre!

Weekend #29

Photobucket

A weekend of little surprises with my favourite black carrot cake from Serangoon Food Centre.

Bankaku's shrimp crackers from Gerald, Harry Potter, Canele's Nougatine, fireworks during ballet under the stars, Bob Blumer's coconut shrimp and a birthday present from my sister in Hong Kong.

I loved Weekend #29 (according to my handphone).

Kway Chap Braised Duck

Warning: Heartache Alert.
This post could prove detrimental, psycologically and emotionally to Singaporeans Abroad. Prolonged viewing may incur immediate bouts of violence and subsequent mood swings that may persist even under the prescription of anti-depression medication.

Lunch at Serangoon Gardens Food centre a a feast for the eyes as well as our guts.

Braised Duck.

Qualifying as labour of love, the duck has probably been braised for several hours in a spice-infused broth which led to an inviting brown facade.

Mum was very taken with the duck ,which transcended the cliche that duck was easily overcooked. Apart from the rich flavour, the duck was marked for its tenderness, which made it difficult to keep your chopsticks from straying back for more.

You know you have truly assimilated into the Singaporean lifestyle when you manage to devour a plate of pig innards without breaking into a sweat. Of course, to cut you some slack, eating at a hawker centre has always been sweat-ening affair.

Garden Street Kway Chap

The works included pig intestines, belly, stomach lining, alongside vegan-friendly hard boiled eggs, tofu, tau kee and pickled vegetables- all eaten alongside a bowl, excuse me, make that TWO bowls of flat rice noodles in dark soya herby broth.

Somehow with a long queue in check, the crowd-pleasing flavours weren't much of a surprise. A classic battle of expectations versus surprises, the kway chap held no surprises but matched expectations.

Having said that, I have an uneasy confession to make- I am not fond of such iconic local hawker fare. GASSSPPP! Call Internal Security Act, well Dr McDreamy will do too and have this girl's brain examined! Whats wrong with her??? These maddening irresistable-to-some treats demand a platform of their own and here I am rejecting it, when placed in front of me. When Family tucked into lunch with a hearty gusto, I was happily forking through the pumpkin prune cake and chocolate delight, along with a huge plate of tropical fruits.

I deserve the title for Most Random Eater. Haha...

Serangoon Gardens

four hours of clubbing in 3-inch heels. by the end of last night, my feet hurt so bad i had walked home bare-footed.

ok, that sounded worst than it actually was because

1. i didn't have to walk much since newly-made-friend janice gave me a ride home.
2. i only had to walk from janice's car to my front gate which was less than ten metres away.

but it was a great night out with the girls! and guys (ducks away from mop posed as a dart).. felt like some ac gathering but what the heck- they are good in small doses.

the damage was done anyway and i had to turn to my crummy diamante-balding flip-flops for lunch today. yes! i dragged my utterly sorry ass to lunch with wai and charl. again, i am guilty of over-exaggetaing (wait, could you be guilty of that?!) because charl was kind enough to give me a ride.. anyway we headed off to serangoon gardens hawker centre since i was craving good taste and high value... which simply reads: burst my budget. needs great-tasting and cheap cheap cheap food.

charl enjoying her duck rice..

apparently the duck rice is pretty popular.. so be prepared to wait during lunch hours.

i had mee pok dry.. "original botanical gardens fishball noodle" screamed the signboard. hmm, i don't really have a clue on how popular or famous this store is but i just couldn't resist the sight of deep fried fishcakes displayed in front of the store.

but it is definitely one of the better fishball noodles i've had so far.. just the right amount of chili, oil and vinegar coated each strand of chewy noodles and i like the extra bits of salted fish which were delightfully crunchy.

wai had a pallid-looking beef hor fun so we decided to order roti john. you must be thinking, "where's the link?!" believe me, typing it out doesn't read much sense either. but you see, under normal circumstances, it wouldn't be satisfying nor justifiable to subject your tastebuds to such anemic flavours so.. in an attempt to make up for the substandard entree.. ok! i admit it's a really bad excuse to pig out.
