mooned over.

yes. the mooncake festival is here! though a more politically- correct reference would be 'mid-autumn festival', mooncakes still surface as the highlight of this event since kids nowadays would rather play with nintendos than carry lanterns.

traditional golden-brown mooncakes are made of heavy, sticky lotus-seed paste and contain whole egg-yolks in the middle. but these days, as manufacturers clamour to win over consumers' tastebuds, we now -pseudo-sigh- suffer from the dilemma of too many choices. with traditional delights and daring innovations (think chempedak and white truffles), many hoteliers, pastry shops, bakeries have jumped onto the bakewagon and whipped up some treats guranteed to make some go huh?!

too many choices, so little time.. and even less money to splurge!

if you are like me- raring to try out some unusual flavours but not willing to buy an entire mooncake or a box of eight for fear of making the wrong choice.. do what i did! pop over to takashimaya ngee ann city and participate in their mid-autumn festival. there, you have the best consolidated array of hoteliers, pastry shops, bakeries (from ritz-carlton to bakerzin to bengawan solo) proudly displaying their specialities.

of course, the best part would have to be the samples- as they are literally thrown at you. thus you get to try green tea, chestnut paste, yam paste, oreo, bailey's, pandan, black sesame paste, d24 durian, dark chocolate, macadamia and decide what floats your palate without burning any dough (pun intended).

as wai would say, "SWEET!"
