Red Giselle by Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg (Russia)
"...one of the great dramatic ballets of the 20th century that took a genius to make it this good."
– San Francisco Chronicle
Performing for the first time in Singapore, Red Giselle has been described as a "theatrical tour de force". Eifman, widely considered the greatest living choreographer in Russia and a "master of contemporary dance drama", has revolutionized the Soviet grand classical tradition, creating a bold and modern form that is at its highest level of expressiveness. His dance company, set up in 1977, is today known for its rich theatricality and inventiveness, and "unlike any other dance company you have ever seen, or are likely to see".
Red Giselle traces the dramatic rise and fall of a gifted but doomed ballerina who is driven to madness by her art, loves and ghosts of her past. It is based on the life of Russian ballerina Olga Spessivtseva (1895-1991), known for her unforgettable portrayal of the title role in the ballet Giselle, and whose life seems to have mirrored the heroine's tragic spiral into madness. As the story of Red Giselle unfolds, from the ballet world in Revolutionary Russia to the Grand Opera and cabarets in Paris, the bold effect of Eifman's emotional dance language and his use of storytelling techniques from theatre and film, with masterful performances by a virtuoso corps de ballet, is evident. The spectacular wedded to the intimate, reality intertwined with fantasy, this rich and multi-layered production has been performed to rave reviews and is "unmissably good".
