PS Cafe

Sunday morning, family decided to spend some quality time over brunch at ps cafe dempsey road.

With two fried eggs, crispy bacon, grilled tomatoes, lettuce, roasted asparagus, pesto clamped between house-made bread.. the big breakfast sandwich was a hearty order, fit for a golfer who in an hour would be spending five buggy-less hours under the trecherous sun i.e. perfect for dad! Although size-wise, the sandwich didn't disappoint (practically bigger than both my palms put side by side together), I couldn't help but wonder if the sandwich would have been more asthetically-and-taste-wise pleasing if the bread had been toasted or at the very least, whole-grain.

The coconut and caraway waffles were adorned with saute bananas and crisp bacon, slavored with honey and golden syrup. If you are wondering, "what is 'caraway'?" According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: caraway, also known as persian cumin (carum carvi) is a spice native to europe and western asia. Hmm, interesting..

I think the caraway was imperative in elevating the status of the waffles from "comforting but run of the mill" to "great pick-me-up delice". it goes without saying that the bananas enhanced the taste test and the crispy bacon was handy in cutting the threatening sweetness of honey and syrup.

The cheese and bacon muffin was short of amazing. Perhaps because this was my first attempt on a savory muffin, I had expected fireworks in the making. Though the muffin itself was a dishy mould of moist buttery goodness, the skimp toppings (ahem, no filling?) left much to be desired.

Ultimately, brunch is tricky business and it only takes a couple of easily-overlooked details to sensationlize or diminish the dining experience. As for PS Cafe, the servings were big though one wonders if it justified the price tag. Bitty details such as non-toasted bread and stingy muffin fillings left me undecided over whether this was THE place i would invest my "lazy gourmet brunch allegience".

Having said that, i am pleased to annouce that there was at least one dish that was return-worthy. Presenting the blue cheese and caramelised onion flan. Blue cheese and Onions? YYYech, one would expect such a lethal combination to top the list of "what to order to gross your date out".

But it REALLY was amazing! In a very obtuse only-a-mother-could-love sort of way..

tThe nose-wrinkly blue cheese first hits you like a locomotive, then determindly clings onto your nasal turbinates, leaving you little choice but to observe a moment of silence before you continue.. Gradually, the aromatic whiff of caramelized onions sneaks in as the scathing pungence of blue cheese thins out. Served with bacon, spinach and baby tomato salad in homemade dressing, I would encourage you to share this for fear of overwhelming eggy-cheeseiness.

That is if you can find someone with tastebuds as adventurous as yours.. you have been warned!

PS Cafe is the place to see and be seen. But if like me you care naught for both, there are other most interesting places to try out.

the hunt for the perfect brunch place continues

Nice, nice. Been giving myself reasons to avoid this place due to pre-conceptions. I think I have a change of mind.
