today, kiku, justine and i took shell (from shanghai) to my sushi restaurant for lunch. this being justine and kiku's second time, i wanted to introduce them to something special so we ordered perenial favourites the california maki, spicy salmon maki, maui maki (mango and tuna) and phillie maki (cream cheese and smoked salmon).. and a tempura mix thrown in.
i was speechless when the sushi platter arrived. ordinarily, i would have basked in employee pride whilst the others took in a moment of exclaimation. but this was no ordinary platter of sushi. the sushi chef, who was making it, threw an extra rainbow roll and ebi tempura maki, creating an arresting array of moveable feast.
with fresh gorgeous pink salmon embracing california maki and toasted sesame seeds confettied all over, the rainbow roll was sensational and it has dethroned the phillie maki as my grub to have. armed with a predisposition for all things oily and bad for you!!!, we all thought the ebi tempura maki in all its deep-fried glory was oiishily good.
but why was i, for once, lost for words? i was actually overwhelmed because just last night, when thea made the staff food for us, i had asked him what the rainbow was because it was my first encounter with it. i had just casually remarked that it was great and today he just made it even without us ordering it. furthermore, the rainbow roll and ebi tempura maki belonged to the more exclusive section of the menu- a section which we students did not even bother checking out...
in a way, i kind of felt awkward because of all the generosity shown. whAT'S WRONg with ME???
