Inspired by PY, here is a short questionnaire for all of you =)

1. Mac & cheese or truffle fries?

2. Favourite dim sum?

3. Are you a 'bread', 'rice' or 'noodle' person?

4. American mayo or kewpie?

5. Favourite pizza topping?

6. What is the one food description you detest or find most cliche?

7. Where would you go for a meal if you had USD$1000 to splurge on (could be anywhere in the world)?

9. Favourite foodie movie?

10. What would you cook for someone you love (assuming you have the culinary prowess of Julia Child, Joel Robuchon, Nigella Lawson etc)?

* * *

Here are my answers:

1. I cannoooot resist mac & cheese, especially those with uber crusty toppings.

2. It’s a tough fight between the char siew soh, XO fried carrot cake and custard bun with salted yolk. For now, I’m leaning towards custard bun with salted yolk as it is recent discovery.

3. Though I consume a lot of bread, deep down inside, I’m a ‘rice’ person.

4. My heart belongs to kewpie and I think the bub is starting to resemble the kewpie doll =S

5. Favourite pizza topping? Caramelized onions and blue cheese … mmm

6. Melt in your mouth, orgasmic … but this takes the cake: better than sex.

7.  Sushi from Sushi Sho by Keiji Nakazawa currently sounds like da ultimato experiences.

8. Pierre Herme for that OMG moment.

9. Eat Drink Man Woman

10. Steamboat… Kidding. I think I will make dumplings (饺子) using my mum’s recipe as dumplings require lots of tender loving care when you make them.

Hope to hear from you in the comment box!

1. Mac and cheese. This was a very tough choice but I choose your hubby's mac and cheese over PS Cafe's Truffle fries any day.

2. Siew Mai, always. I gauge Dim Sum standards through this dish.

3. Rice. When I am sad, I think of fried rice and smile. Haha!

4. Kewpie, definitely. Subtle sweetness and the soft light texture sends shiver down my spine.

5. Sausages!!! Especially the processed type. No fresh sausages on pizza for me.

6. "Amazing" but then again, I use it far too often. 2013 I aim to expand my vocabulary. Haha!

7. No idea which but it will definitely serve steak and mac and cheese! haha.

8. Laduree. The unusual flavour combination in PH does not appeal to me.

9. Chocolat. Chocolate and Johnny Depp (at his hottest). Need I say more?

10. Anything. As long as it is their favourite food, I will master it. I want them to eat it at a restaurant then turn to me and say "yours is better". LOL

So fun hee :)

1. Mac & cheese or truffle fries?
Mac & cheese because I got to know it first. Laced with truffle salt can?

2. Favourite dim sum?
Difficult question. I love tim sum as a package.

3. Are you a bread, rice or noodle person?
Rice, to the extent curry sellers at coffee shops will give me rice instead of french loaf without asking.

4. American mayo or kewpie?
Kewpie. No compromise.

5. Favourite pizza topping?
Smoked salmon.

6. What is the one food description you detest or find most cliche?
Read this off an ig account recently "the interactive food at XXX restaurant is so so good". Don't understand. So I guess "interactive food" is rather detestable for now.

7. Where would you go for a meal if you had USD$1000 to splurge on (could be anywhere in the world)?
Huh don't know leh. Guess I will never splurge this much on food and hence will never know where to splurge. I really want to try Bukhara but not sure if it will used up my US$1000.

8. Macarons from Laduree or Pierre Herme?
Pierre Herme.

9. Favourite food movie?
Like water for chocolate

10. What would you cook for someone you love (assuming you have the culinary prowess of Julia Child, Chef Wan, Joel Robuchon, Nigella Lawson etc)?
Ayam Kapitan because the someone I love loves it.

Can't wait to read your answers :) you will eventually tell us right?

1. Truffle fries by far!

2. This one's a blank for me.

3. Being a Gemini, I'm both a noodle and a bread person!
Noodles is just comforting for the soul but bread sure lifts the spirit. If I had to choose tho, I'd go for bread because the smell of bread in the oven is heavenly.

4. American mayo despite health advisory warning signs blaring whenever I have any.

5. Non-pickled seaweed.

6. Fusion. Like, really? Isn't cooking all about combining ingredients together?

7. Pit roasted lamb in the desert at night. Preferably middle eastern or Turkish.

8. Never had either. *hint hint*

9. Toss between Julia & Julia and Le Chef. Latter wins because of the French comedy I guess.

10. Bread. The smell filling the kitchen and having an afternoon tea while the world goes by (and the Mediterranean in the distance). Haha.

1. Mac & Cheese. Truffle oil these days are mostly synthetic.

2. Wu Kok. Crispy sweetness wrapped around savory porky goodness.

3. Bread, because of butter and versatility. Noodles come a close second.

4. Kewpie. For savory items because the sour tang cuts through beautifully.

5. Mushrooms and/or the Quattro Formaggi.

6. Not really detest but anything by http://www.hisfoodblog.com/ and http://www.gourmetestorie.com/ is cliche.

7. Probably Liu Yuan Pavilion on Lockhart Road, Hong Kong. Or Momofuku.

8. Neither. It's over-rated by women who can't bake.

9. Eat Drink Man Woman (the Lee Ang version)

10. Uni Pasta.

"XXX gives it the OOMPH!" wth is oomph.

PH must I say more.

9. Favourite foodie movie?
None.

10. What would you cook for someone you love (assuming you have the culinary prowess of Julia Child, Joel Robuchon, Nigella Lawson etc)?
I want the person to cook for me, not the other way round. But if I must, it'd be my adobo which I'm very proud of. And ter ka slurps.

2. Favourite dim sum?
Those runny, molten custard buns!

3. Are you a 'bread', 'rice' or 'noodle' person?

KEWPIE!

5. Favourite pizza topping?
Pineapple. Lol.

6. What is the one food description you detest or find most cliche?

Hi my dear! My thoughts...

1. Mac and cheese or truffle fries? A truly painful choice this would be...! If I cannot say both, I'll have to go with truffle fries. Crunch, oil, umami-ness, salt... Oh yes. Yes please.

2. Favourite dim sum? Char siew sou - especially those at Imperial Treasure Teochew. Buttery, salty-sweet, fatty, yet crisp and flaky.

3. Are you a 'bread', 'rice' or 'noodle' person? NOODLE! ... But you knew that, xiao ;-)

4. American mayo or kewpie? Kewpie. Wouldn't get sick of it as fast. I must declare though that I love mayo like a baby loves his security "di-lam" (baby bolster in Hokkien slang). Very good for alleviating sadness.

5. Favourite pizza topping? Good mozzarella, loads of fresh basil, good tomato sauce, salami, spicy red chilli. Simple does it.

6. What is the one food description you detest or find most cliche? Can't think of one, really. I suppose sweepingly I detest vagueness in reviews. "Good", "tasty", "okay" are rather uninformative descriptions that don't help. Constructive, plis.

7. Where would you go for a meal if you had USD$1000 to splurge on (could be anywhere in the world)? The now-defunct El Bulli, or Noma.

8. Macarons from Laduree or Pierre Herme? Laduree. But only because I haven't had Pierre Herme.

9. Favourite foodie movie? Ratatouille! Heh heh.

10. What would you cook for someone you love (assuming you have the culinary prowess of Julia Child, Joel Robuchon, Nigella Lawson etc)? Italian, I think - wood-fired pizzas cos it's Marc's and my dad's favorite. Pasta, because my search for The Perfect Bowl of Pasta continues. If I could make my own, that would certainly shortcut things! Now, if only. Sigh :-)

happy 2013 to all! Have a flavorful, inspiring and varied 2013 :-)

1. Mac & cheese or truffle fries?
Mac and cheese -- gruyere, white cheddar, sharp cheddar, provolone, fontina. I want it soft, stinky, nutty, stringy, melty... and... and... *ahem* ok I'll stop now.

2. Favourite dim sum?
Panfried XO rice rolls or carrot cake. Also: salted egg yolk custard buns.

3. Are you a 'bread', 'rice' or 'noodle' person?
Bread. From chewy dark German brot to soft white Japanese pullman loaves. Goes with anything. In the words of Nigel Slater (Toast), "It is impossible not to love someone who makes toast for you. People's failings...fall into insignificance as your teeth break through the rough, toasted crust and sink into the doughy cushion of white bread underneath. Once the warm, salty butter has hit your tongue, you are smitten. Putty in their hands." :)

4. American mayo or kewpie?
Kewpie. Hello, how cute is the name?! Besides, I really like that cloying feel. :P

5. Favourite pizza topping?
4 cheese. Smoked salmon + capers + raw white onion works too.

6. What is the one food description you detest or find most cliche?
"decadent", "sinful"

7. Where would you go for a meal if you had USD$1000 to splurge on (could be anywhere in the world)?
I'd go to Shopsins in NYC and order as many items on the menu as possible. No dress code, no manners. Just 900+ items and me. :D

8. Macarons from Laduree or Pierre Herme?
Never tried either! :O I'd try PH over L since I've read/heard it's better. My favourite pastry by far would be the kouign-amann.

9. Favourite foodie movie?
Udon. I watched it on a flight to Japan and LOL-ed til my Japanese neighbours got a bit put off. :X

10. What would you cook for someone you love (assuming you have the culinary prowess of Julia Child, Joel Robuchon, Nigella Lawson etc)?
Kaya-butter toast, soft boiled eggs, sock tea/coffee. Yakun style. You have to pay attention to timing and detail. It's not something you could put aside in the oven/stove and leave to cook. :)

Kewpie!!! Tastiest mayo I've ever had.

5. Favourite pizza topping?
Prosciutto!

7. Where would you go for a meal if you had USD$1000 to splurge on (could be anywhere in the world)?
The Fat Duck. Huge fan of Heston Blumenthal. He's my culinary hero. Have you seen who he makes his blackforest cake? The most perfect one I've ever seen!

8. Macarons from Laduree or Pierre Herme?
Laduree! I really think they taste better than PH. Personal preference.

A 5 course meal of my dad's Peranakan repertoire (once i've mastered it of course) - Ayam Buah Keluak, Babi Pongteh, Assam Pedas Udang, Kong Ba. Dessert I will make the crispest Belgian waffles topped with home-made chocolate maple bacon ice-cream!

xo,
Cheryl
