Brunch by The Chef & the Butler

Before we went on our road trip to Napa, we thought it would be a good idea to grab a bite first. But we didn’t want just any old buttered toast or clam chowder, we wanted brunch though understandably most places don’t do mid-week brunches.

We lucked out at The Chef & the Butler which was in SOMA, walking distance from our hotel. A few sketchy roads later, we came across the most darling of neighbourhoods and the unmissable The Butler & Chef Bistro.

Charming café, enameled tables, vintage posters and varnished oven rattan chairs, I could just feel it in my lardo-wrapped bones that the bistro will be teeming with people and le poochies on weekends.

Serving up fresh out of the oven French pastries, Belgian waffles and quiches, The Chef & the Butler regards itself as the “only authentic French bistro in San Francisco” (though I find this tagline a little dubious). Eggs and toast fetch a fairly pricey meal at this bistro but portions are sizable which, again, casts a dim shadow on the “authentic French” experience. But the food filled us up good.

La Norvegienne, a buckwheat crêpe with smoked salmon and crème fraiche.

Eggs Benedict – breakfast for dope-free champions.

Two perfectly poached eggs with slabs of smoked salmon, swathed in freshly made lemony hollandaise sauce, served with toasted organic olive bread with and the yummiest baby spinach salad (felt like I had been re-introduced to the vegetable).

Accompanying the bill - a couple of chocolate truffles to send us on our way.

And we are off to Napa!
