Cedele the "Western Restaurant"

Saturday lunch too us to Cedele Wheelock where we had the carrot cake, hot breakfast and rosti (they serve breakfast till 5pm!).

The hot breakfast came with scrambled eggs on toast and sauteed mushrooms*, while the rosti comprised of 2 potato square pancakes, sunny side up eggs & tomatoes with sauteed mushrooms*. However, what made lunch memorable wasn't the food but an egg-traordinary encounter.

Here in Southeast Asia, a fried egg is lacking unless iaccompanied by a drizzle of dark soy sauce or ketjap manis. However, when Ade requested for dark soy sauce, we were rewarded with a look of bewilderment

"We don't have dark soy sauce..."

O-kayyy

And THIS, "... this is a western-type of restaurant"

Gee, is that why I had to leave my yak at the door?

Too bad the ray of enlightenment eluded the 3 of us. Say if time were frozen and I had 3 minutes to assume Miss Fabia lip-filler-overdose demeanor cum accent, this is what I would have replied:

-clears throat-

Don't you know why I am?!

What do you mean you don't read the Sunday papers?

Here's a laminated copy of my interview.

Keep it, it's yours. I have dozens more in my car.

HAHA, if only I had the guts.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't dark soy sauce one of the most basic seasonings in most, if not every kitchen in Asia? I mean, it should be right up there with salt or light soy sauce right? It's not like we were asking for sambal blachan.

Cedele- Bless their bread. Pity about the service.

* Denotes choice of bacon rashers, sauteed mushrooms or sausages

Sorry, Celele is just another locals idea of what Western style food and pastries are like. Yes, their bread is not bad but they have a long way to go to match Western style cakes and pies. It's like trying to get a Westerner to cook Chinese food. It just can't be done unless someone lived and studied in these Western arts in the country of origin! As a Westerner who has lived in Singapore more than 25 years I find very few if any Western restuaurants coming close to what they are supposed to be serving.

Would be great if you could provide me with some suggestions. =)

yixiaooo, are you asking me suggestions on what I consider good Western restuarants?

It's not easy for me to say which are the good Western style restuarants as I do not eat at any of the upper class ones mainly because of their prices. As for some of the other family style ones that I think are terrible are Swensen's, Pizza Hut, Rockies and Billy Bomber. The only one that I have found that sticks very close to what they claim to be selling is Hard Rock. Dan Ryan's use to serve some pretty good food years ago but I hear that their food has gone down but I have yet to check that out.

i think its kind of unreasonable to assume that every restaurant in Asia should have dark soy sauce. Cedele may be a restaurant in Asia but that does not make it an Asian restaurant. Plus i don't think that not having soy sauce in the kitchen makes bad service, neither does the statement "this is a western-type restaurant" make the server rude. To me it was a kind of a natural reaction enough... just my 2 cents worth...

I have to say i think its a bit unfair to have complained about the lack of soy sauce. It isnt an asian restaurant and im sure if you went to some other french or italian restaurant they wouldnt have soy sauce...

We wouldn't know for sure, will we?
