Buko Nero

I don't mean to be judgmental (hah, maybe I should try a little harder) but there are some things that I would never do for food. Like queue xx hours for a box of Donut Factory Donuts (nothing quite screams, "I need a real job" than that lurid orange box). Having said that, there are some things I wouldn't mind 'queuing up' for.... Like say Buko Nero, where I called to ask for "the earliest possible lunch reservation" and actually put my name down for a reservation for 2 weeks later. Well so long as public humiliation isn't on the menu, make it a table for three.

The 20-seater restaurant obviously doesn't buy the 'Economics of Scale' theory. Hello? What happened to that 'Quick let's churn out dishes like a sweatshop, the faster we turn tables, the higher our profits?' mission statement? Obviously here at Buko Nero, there isn't an inch of truth to that saying and that's why this tinier-than-tiny eatery has been around for years even without a self-titled dotcom and advertising.

Its reputation precedes itsel- Chubbyhubby calls it "The Hardest Reservation in Singapore". Many have warned of a "month-long advanced booking"... Come on people, it's just food?! Then again, is 'food' ever just 'food'? Well if that were the case, people like Ruth Reichl and Jamie Oliver would be living on food stamps.

After our orders were placed, a basket of sun-dried tomato bread sticks made it to our table and my 'say yay to rice, nay to bread' sister wolfed down a couple in minutes. We also received a complimentary Chef's appetizer of fried quail's egg and mashed pumpkin on toast. Naturally we oohed and aahed over the amuse bouche, which resembled a hobbit-sized egg on toast.

For starters, we had the beef carpaccio and soup. The paper thin sheets of beef carpaccio, lemon dressing and pine nuts eased down gently.

Quite frankly, the green pea, watercress and crabmeat soup sounded like a recipe concocted by Dr Seuss and Roald Dahl. I was taken aback by the surprisingly light flavour. In fact, I felt it needed a good pinch of salt. Big Name for Little Flavour.

I was disappointed by the main courses offered braised chicken thigh or penne with braised cod and zucchini ragu. To me, it was a decision to be made between the most boring meat that ever walked the face of this earth and well, instant noodles.

Between 'dullsville' and 'dullsville', I went for 'dullsville'.

Figuring my marginal utility would be maximised by the presence of cod and zucchini, I chose the penne. Whoa, even with that rationale behind the dish, I had to be coaxed into finishing half my plate. The penne was done perfectly al dente but I was bored in 5 forksful. The cod was somewhere out there but nowhere to be found and I could only seek comfort in the zucchini niblets.

The crab and prawn pasta spotted the same problem. It had a richer taste, compared to the slightly creamy penne but I was bored in .... *snooze*

Fortunately, dessert perked me up. The coffee ice cream was served in the cutest spade and bucket. The chocolate coconut cake partially submerged in still-warm gula melaka was the next best thing to my favourite comfort food- vanilla ice cream and ruffles original potato chips.

At the heart of this restaurant stands husband-and-wife team Chef Oscar and his wife, Tracy, who could easily give Barbara and Allan Pease a run for their moolah. Tracy demonstrates caring but non-intrusive service while the food Chef Oscar creates mirrors his own marriage: a cross-cultural Italian and Asian love tale.

Personable and surprisingly relaxing, eating at Buko Nero felt like attending a dinner party at a friend's home. It was also here at Buko Nero where I encountered my first "No Photography Allowed" restaurant policy, but no hard feelings as it wasn't as irritating as that "We Don't Serve Tap Water" restaurant policy.

My less than gratifying experience should be attributed to my aversion towards "fusion". To me, fusion feels an unwanted guest at the dinner table. It is the black sheep of the family, the socially inept and sexually confused cousin, who "went to boarding school".

Ikea, A Swede Deal

The right words uttered by the right person can sound so good.

No, it wasn't "I love you, you complete me" or "You asked for a once-owned-by-Jennifer-Lopoez 6.1 carat pink diamond ring by Harry Winston, you got it".

Instead, it was simply, "You have what it takes to be successful".

He might as well have just said, "You are the next Samantha Brown, your are getting your very own feature travel programme!" But I was taken aback and reduced to the ends of my Starbucks seat. I muttered 'thank you' (or did I say something esle?) and sat back in semi-daze.

Sweet?

Yes, very.

Ikea's Swede deals appeal to the value-seeker in us. A couple of fridays ago, we had dinner at IKEA. The amazing thing about Ikea it's no longer just about the "furniture". They have some interesting designs and after dinner, we would usually explore the basement where they sell thingsyou-never-know-you-needed-but-do-so-now! Inevitably, we would leave with something: this time round we left with a flask for coffee though we are hardly ever at home for breakfast or brunch and on a previous visit, we bought a pan that was good for preparing pasta for "3-4" people.

Anyway, back to dinner.

I wanted to get the smorrebrod, an prawn and egg open sandwich but the pallid looking cold water prawns and mayonnaise overload didn't exactly scream "delicious!"

Instead we went for our usuals, which included

Gravlax

The gravlax, with addictive sweet mustard sauce.

Cocktail Prawn

Cocktail prawns- dad's usual, not mine. Cold water prawns do nothing for me, I didn't like this at all.

Swedish Meatballs

Swedish meatballs, with freshly boiled potatoes and lingonberry jam (boy, I always thought it was cranberry sauce!). There's something ikea's meatballs. I can't put my finger on it. Believe me, I could follow this recipe at home punctiliously and it wouldn't be the same. Then again, why would I rackle my brain over how to make it when I could get an amazing deal at ikea itself? They hold the mandate for having the best swedish meatballs (not that i have tried Swedish meatballs anywhere esle).

Poached Salmon

Poached salmon with freshly boiled potatoes and Kryptonite green broccoli, drizzled with chive and butter sauce. Clean-tasting and pleasant- quintessentially Scandinavian.

Fish & Chips

Daily special Fish and chips, which had a lackluster batter that limped against chive and butter sauce but at least the fries were chunky and firm.

In UK, they serve Mediterranean pie and carry an organic range.

In UAE, they have a shawarma and Interestingly enough, IKEA at UAE serves only Halal so I wonder if their meatballs (sans pork) will taste any differently.

In Japan, they have a salmon wrap, which I would like to try and this Crazy Dinner Offer where 295 yen you get 5 meatballs + crayfish and salmon pate + pancake with chocolate mousse. Now, that's dirt cheap for japan.

Oh my goodness! In Taiwan, IKEA has a tv program! And you can even watch them if you have windows media player.

IKEA is cool.

Malmo, Swedan

malmo, swedan

today marked a pebble-sized milestone in my travel endeavours- an impromptu trip to malmo, swedan (the motherland of ikea and h&m)!

kiku msn-ed me around ten-ish to ask if i was interested and this being just another day reserved for vegetating, i thought, "why not".. the two of us were the epitome of efficiency- we only reach the central station at 10:55am and the train was due to leave at 11:03am.. we still had to find train tickets, grab breakfast and cash from the atm. amazingly, we accomplished all that in six minutes, with the queues at mcdonalds' being expectedly long and the wait staff unexpected slow.

our train ride was a smooth 45-min journey across the oresund bridge and it was a good thing we managed to obtain a tourist-friendly map from the information counter. the must-sees or to-dos of swedan's third largest city are situated around around the same area- Stortorget and Lilla Torg. as the main shopping district was nearly ramrod straight, malmo actually felt alot like the softer, less-edgey cousin of inner copenhagen. charming little boutiques and imposing shopping centres share the limelight within the arena and with the crowds weaving in and out, this is probably as busy as it gets here in malmo downtown. a walk from Lilla Torg leads you to Gustav Adolf's Torg, which is another popular meeting/ shopping square.

my highlight of the walk would definitely be the visit to the form/design center. a modest hole in the wall, the display space was clean-cut and well, nothing to harp about but i took delight in the quizzical items for sale in their shop. from the eccentric anna kyyro quinn felt cushions to the rocking horse bunny, there was a need for brat-control, otherwise there would have been numerous 'i want!' outbursts. i even spent quite a while screening the fabric textiles, many of which i had every desire to incorporate into my blog background.

we took a break at the triangln centre where I had the most expensive cheesecake in my entire life- 29 swedish kronas which converts to roughly S$6+. ok I know it doesn't seem like much when i blog about it, but let's not forget three magic words- STUDENT ON BUDGET and back in Singapore, i thought it was ridiculous to pay S$5.50 for a slice from starbucks and this was half the size of a normal starbucks..

the taste verdict? a bite into it almost made me regret the initial begrudging. It. Was. That. Good. the cheesecake looked ordinary, the ingredients seemed commomplace but there was just something about it that heightened the pleasure buds on my tongue. was it the discernly-fresh strawberries? or the sensous cake which melted as i rolled it over my tongue? maybe it was even the biscuit base, reminiscent of carb-goodness.. but very likely, it was the combination of all three factors PLUS creamserved on the side.

traditional swedish architecture>

after tea, we made our way to Malmohus Castle, which was unforgivingly anti-climaxal. perhaps, missing the opening hours of the museum contributed to my lack of enthusiasm cum understanding but i just wasn't very impressed with the red brick architecture. from a distance, the turning-torso structure was by far more impressive.

otherwise, i had a great time in malmo. i can't wait to google all the scandinavian designs and find out more about them..

Ikea Lunch

teh love of my life.

yang and i popped by at ikea's today for christmas presents.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

i had the steak, yang had the meatballs and we topped it off with serviettes? nah we will just lick our fingers chicken wings.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

slight exaggeration? none taken.

for tea, it was almost hilarious. as yang could not tear herself away from the delectable temptation of beef rendang, we shared a plate of nasi padang from mansor d' cafe (3rd level) at far east plaza.

beef rendang. black squid. egg in sambal, fried egg amd fishcake. thereby creating a fiery feeling in my tummy.. feeling very LOTR mordor-ish.. oh! you definitely have to grab a cup of teh tarik.. i don't know how they do it but it is remarkably fragrant.. very different from the limp pasty drink that you get from most places nowadays.

i am so glad to have found this unassuming nasi padang outlet in such a convenient place in town.

Ikea

meat the swede.

didn't make it for my 8:30am class.

going to have another bowl of tau huay, courtesy of darrelle.

hey dearie, hope your papadums are still edible.

oh yea i totally forgot to THANK DARRELLE for helping me out with the pictures.. could not have photographed without a shaky hand if not for her her slicing, twisting, flipping and posing with the food.

i met mum at ikea this afternoon for their kitchen planning services. of course, after reading aromacookery's experience at ikea there was an excuse to have lunch there as well.. -grin

upon arrival, i was greeted by a 3-m long queue like whoa! but the queue moved along pretty quickly under the supervison of the ikea employees and their coordinated hand signals.. kind of reminded me of those intense wall street scenes where market traders point just about in every direction, with swirls and flips to heighten the atmosphere. haha..

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

mum had the swedish meatballs.. tenderly juicy, the winning formula is a result of swedish beef and danish pork served with cream sauce, some-berry jam, and steamed potatoes while two medium-rare slices of roast beef topped with mushroom sauce and served with fries and broccoli became my lunch.

one thing we did not but SHOULD HAVE had were the chicken wings, looking around our table was probably the only one free of those finger-lickin' delight .. but after last night's fiasco, it took a herculean effort to lay off the wings... but well, our apple pie dessert (choked full of apples and walnuts) kind of made up for it.

we got lunch and our kitchen proposal! and if all goes well, we will have a new kitchen in 2 weeks... darr! you could make your riccotta pancakes at my place.. hahah...
